The Powerhouse Church of God in Christ collapsed May 14 after finally giving way to damages the building suffered during Hurricane Ike. According to Tomball Mayor Gretchen Fagan, the church did not have insurance or enough money for repairs after the hurricane ravaged the building.
The church was destroyed in the collapse, but a new building will soon be taking its place. Last week, Fagan sent out an e-mail to members of the Tomball community and former council woman Mary Harvey made a plea at the May 18 city council meeting for volunteers to come out to the church site May 23 and help rebuild Powerhouse Church.
“So many of us spend time helping other communities and countries in their time of need,” Fagan said. “This is how we can help in our own backyard.”
Prior to the May 23 volunteer effort, heavy clean up crews were on hand late last week to remove the debris from the fallen church and prepare the site for the new building.
According to Fagan, MAS Contractors, Moss Construction and Waste Management delivered equipment to help clean up the site.
