Magnolia Marshal Carpenter calling it quits

Beginning June 1, the City of Magnolia will be on the search for a new City Marshal after Jeri Carpenter announced her resignation May 15.

Carpenter has served as the city’s first female marshal since June 2006. Since then, Carpenter has cleared more than 4,900 warrants and accrued more than $635,000 for the City of Magnolia.

Prior to the appointment of Carpenter to the city marshal’s position, the job lay vacant.

“I was an excellent patrol officer and proved beyond a doubt the need for a City Marshal,” she stated in her resignation letter. “I wore my uniform and badge at all times with respect.”

Prior to working as City Marshal, Carpenter was a patrol officer for the Magnolia Police Department.

“She was a very good employee,” City Administrator Ryan Kelley said.

He added that Carpenter would make arrests for any types of open warrants the police had out. The City Marshal’s position fell under the administration of Judge John Purvis.

“My resignation comes with a lot of respect and a lot of pride,” Carpenter said. “I worked jobs and hours no one else would ever have worked. I thank God I was able to touch so many lives for the good.”

Kelley said the city is currently advertising through the Texas Municipal League to find another City Marshal.

“We still plan to have a City Marshal,” he said. “That position is important to us.”
