| Stoll unseats Lazenby in Position 2 run-off |
|
The Tomball City Council continued its transformation June 13 as Mark Stoll became the latest to unseat an incumbent after he handily defeated Roy Lazenby in the run-off election for Position 2.
Stoll received 399 total votes to Lazenby’s 325, making him the second challenger to defeat an incumbent this year. Derek Townsend defeated Mary Harvey for the Position 4 seat in May. Both Lazenby and Stoll said prior to the run-off that their primary goal was to get the voters to return to the polls. “My biggest concern was getting voters to come back,” Stoll said. “When I started seeing the voters come out and who was coming out, I was feeling good.” The writing appeared to be on the wall for Lazenby during early voting after Stoll gained a seemingly insurmountable 267-229 lead. In the June 13 run-off, Stoll widened his lead, garnering 132 votes to Lazenby’s 97. Stoll and Barbara Tague both took on Lazenby during this year’s general election. None of the candidates received 50 percent of the vote, forcing a run-off between the top two finishers, Stoll and Lazenby. This year marked one of the highest turnouts in recent Tomball election history. This year, more than 16 percent of the registered voters in the city turned out for the May 9 general election. Another 13 percent came out for the run-off. “To me, normally when you see a large turnout, no matter what election that’s for, usually that’s when people want a change,” Stoll said. He added that Lazenby called after the results were announced to congratulate him on his victory. Stoll will be sworn in June 22. Lazenby was elected to the Tomball City Council in May 2006 and served one term. This is Stoll’s first term on the council. “I want to thank my supporters for coming out,” Stoll said. “I couldn’t be where I’m at today without the people who supported me.”
