Kelley claims family relation to consulting firm not an issue

Magnolia City Administrator Ryan Kelley admitted he is a cousin of Charles Burditt, President of Burditt, a natural resource consulting service company that has been contracted by the City for various projects since 2007.

Kelley said he was not aware of his cousins’ existence until he was hired at Magnolia and recognized the name Burditt as his grandmother’s name.

He said he wrote him an e-mail asking him if he was his cousin, and that’s he discovered they were related.

However, Kelley was quick to add that the City had already previously worked with Burditt on projects before he was hired as city administrator.

“Burditt had been hired by the City at least a year and a half before Magnolia had heard of me,” Kelley said. “I don’t vote, (on city council actions) so I didn’t choose them.”

He also denied rumors that the City has millions of dollars in contracts with Burditt.

“Design work like that is expensive, I think the total amount is a quarter of a million dollars, and that’s typical,” Kelley said.

Most recently, the City of Magnolia 4A Economic Development Corp. contracted with Burditt to design the new city park and has been paid nearly $40,000 since May.

Councilmember Todd Kana said he was not aware of any relation between Kelley and Burditt until recently.

“I have heard it mentioned recently, but I didn’t know before now,” Kana said.

Kana said he’d have to review the facts before deciding whether or not it was a conflict of interest.

“It could be (a conflict of interest),” Kana said. “I’d have to see the timeline, and whether or not they (Burditt) were hired by 4B before he (Kelley) was the director. I don’t know. The fact that his cousin is working for the City, I don’t think it’s a conflict of interest if he wasn’t aware he was his cousin.”

Councilwoman Patsy Williams did not say whether she believed it was a conflict of interest, saying only that Burditt had been hired by the City before Kelley was hired.

Former councilman Dave Sutherland said he wasn’t aware Kelley and Burditt were cousins until he attended a Magnolia Tomorrow meeting.

“They made no secret of it at the Magnolia Tomorrow meetings,” he said. “It came up and it was disclosed they were cousins at that time and it wasn’t a deeply regarded secret or anything. It seems to be a known fact that they’re cousins.”

Councilman Bramlett, Mayor Jimmy Thornton and Councilman Sammie Scott could not be reached for comment.

I wouldn't be so quick to judge. Just found out about relatives I didn't know about. Why worry Mr. Kelley about this if his cousin has been doing work for the city long before he was hired. Another fine example of a tabloid paper. Paper should be called the tribune Enquirer.

How large are the odds that one would find out that they are related to someone that is earing thousands of dollars from their employer?

I am sure everyone has relatives that they don't know about but how many of us have unknown or recently revealed relatives that are collecting large amounts of money from our employer?

The fact that this was going on long before Ryan was hired leads me to beleive it's just a conicidence. It just seems like people need to have something better to do. Remember when you stir that pot, you're going to get some on you. Just an opinion from a bystander...

This occurs all the time. Family is spread out all over, or maybe in this case family isn't so spread out. I have several family members in the greater Houston area, through blood or marriage and under many different last names. In fact my last name is not consistant with most of my blood relatives in the region, so it occurs (and quite often) that I find someone I'm related to on social networking sites. It just so happened that they were both relatively successful and related to each other. I don't see the issue, and if they broke no laws then there is no actual issue at hand. If you are wary about it, keep an eye on them, which is what you should be doing to every government official ever. But don't try and single someone how who is doing a good job, because of their last name. This sounds like a baseless witch hunt to me.

Councilwoman Patsy Williams did not say whether she believed it was a conflict of interest, saying only that Burditt had been hired by the City before Kelley was hired. No, she wouldn’t say she is going to leave it up to the professionals or send out more emails.

Former councilman Dave Sutherland said he wasn’t aware Kelley and Burditt were cousins until he attended a Magnolia Tomorrow meeting. When was that Sutherland? Before or after Burditt was hired by 4B?

I think it is an interesting story given all the other issues. NOBODY seems to know anything, but trust them (Special People) they will be looking into it? Kelley should be given the benefit of the doubt he is still trying to remember what he did for 15months. I can’t wait for the results of the special investigation by the special people.

If the "special people" come and find out these stories are all fairy tales, will you just go away? or find someone else to hara*s and slander with all these "heard it thru the grapevine" stories

The citizens are concerned about the "kin" as we have been through this before with the building of City Hall. As a taxpaying citizen, I think there should be no "kinship" between anyone on Council or working at City Hall and those with contracts doing business with the City.

I know Burditt was with the 4A Project (worth millions)before Mr. Kelley was hired.

I believe Mr. Kelley knew Burditt had the 4A contract My question is was Mr. Kelley employed by Burditt prior to coming to work for the City. There is a Kelley working for Burditt and the spelling is the same. I just question this....

I don't hear the citizens, just you and your cohorts. I believe that a person can find relatives they didn't know they had. In this case, why should this shower of hatered and revenge be rained down on Mr. Kelley? Sometimes "kinship" happens in working relationships. I believe that City Hall should monitor this a*sociation, but think that it is not new worthy at this time, there are so many other things that need attention, not this.

Find proof that Kelley was working there or shut up. Kelley is a common name, you can't just a*sume it was Ryan. You know what they say about a*suming things. You know if you used your talent for good not evil. Magnolia would be a better place to live.

And I have to wonder why the Tribune is running this story again. Could they not find any other trash to fill the pages. Even the Enquirer comes up with new stuff every week.

Ok lets look at this realistically, Ryan Kelley is the City Administrator, the Top Dog of the City. This man makes all the day to day decisions for the daily operations of the city of magnolia. Yet this man did not realize that the city did not have a signed Contract for 2006-2007 (Even though he was not there he should have reviewed the contracts and educated himself with them by now. Now he also did not realize that the monthly price increased a measly 500 smackers a month. He did not realize that his resume had an error and says that the council and mayor knew. Yet Dave Sutherland and Jimmy Thornton both claim that they did not know. Who is lying here? Mayor and Sutherland (who do not get along) or the big man on campus but knows nothing Ryan Kelley? You know most places will not even consider you as eligible for consideration if there are errors on your resume. You get your resume complete and true before you turn it in. Ryan and the City council has known about this report for some time now that the city is in the red for over a 100k, because if you go back and listen to Dave Sutherland who has been holding up big red flags (a par from a big red truck) about city financial problems for years. Maybe with the reports that more than 50% of the city’s budget going to Police Department they should look at a 10% pay cut on the Police Department’s budget since Rodger Carlies made the police departments pay increase comparable to the city of Houston and other way larger cities. From what I can tell the police department has at least 14 officers. They should take a page out of the City of Tomball book and bring on reserve officers to meet the any short falls that they have.(already I have saved the city money) Reserve officer are volunteers (usually news officer looking to get experience) the city of stagecoach is mostly reserve officers. Cut cost and tighten your belts at the city, is what the paper reported that Kelley said. Yet they spend more money on fireworks, magnolia music festivals and they are still in the whole. Has any one ask the question about where all this money that Carpenter brought in, the 600k in warrants that they were bragging about. What about the 50k that the city made in profits from the Magnolia Music Fesival , that big boy mayor was all Skippy about? Is the police department still spending extra money on overtime for their STEP program that back in the day old corrupt former chief Cunningham and Captain Smith where claiming was bringing in boo coos of money every month? Maybe they spent it all on paying settlements, hush money, and repairing police cars after the female officer and the now sergeant played tag in the brand new charger. Maybe some of the money went to paying to have the record expunged after Mr. lee was wrongfully arrested. The fact of the matter is that there is something a rye in magnolia. To take a page out of my newly found cousin Mr. Exposed’s book, Vivian this is all FACT.

responce to Vivians blog about Magnolia Cites drop in property tax revenu for negative funds

I once believed as you do and thought, how could any of the things past or present be true, it's unbelievable, it's incomprehensible. You will just have to find out for yourself we live and learn. You go girl, just don't ever disagree with Patsy or question any of the issues as we are doing with Facts and ask those to explain. I'm guessing you don't live in the City limits, and feel the pain of the water rates, tax rates or the concerns over Magnolia Ridge, or the money we are paying a second time for City hall. Now a negative balance in the budget and those who are being paid good money don't have a clue. Tell ya what Vivian move into the City feel the pain then you can tell us you know bullxxxx when you read it, because we are living it. I know, you could be the first on the block in Magnolia Ridge and maybe we could get a little of the impact fees the council waved four years ago.
