Magnolia Police Chief resigns

Magnolia police chief Paul Michna put in his 30-day resignation notice to the city Sept. 3, citing the need to focus on his personal life—which he said has been “on hold” due to the amount of work his position requires.

Michna was hired in March of 2008 on a 90-day interim basis which soon became a 2-year agreement, one that allows the city or the chief to submit a 30-day notice of resignation at any time.

“Basically it would expire in March of next year,” he said. “I knew that sometime I would leave.”

As chief, Michna said he never took a vacation or sick day. Even during his days off, he was frequently on the phone, he said.

“I carry my phone while I mow the lawn,” he added. “The past two years have been constant.”

The chief emphasized that his parting with the city was amicable and that he was not “mad at anyone,” dismissing rumors that there were problems between him and other city employees.

“I’m leaving on good terms,” he said, adding, “We need someone to come in and develop a 5-year plan for the police department and implement it, and I’m not that person.”

After he leaves office, Michna said he is planning on focusing on his family, church and working on a building he purchased in Palacios that he hasn’t been able to work on since he became chief.

“I’m an officer in the Spring Creek Church of Christ and need to get back to those duties,” he said. “I think I’ve done what I needed to do--stabilize the department. I think the timing is good, I’m not mad at anyone and I don’t think anyone’s mad at me.”

Mayor Jimmy Thornton said he was aware the chief would resign at sometime, but that he “hates to see him go.”

“He’s done nothing but great things for Magnolia,” Thornton said. “Having Paul Michna at the helm, I knew I didn’t have to worry about the police department.”

Thornton said the city has not taken action to appoint a new police chief.

“At this point, I haven’t talked to any of my council and we have no direction as of now,” he said.

Michna said he is looking at Friday, Oct. 2 as his last day on the job.

“If they haven’t found anyone yet, I’ll do what they want, but if nothing else maybe they’ll find someone on an interim basis,” Michna said. “I’ve really appreciated this opportunity to serve the citizens of Magnolia and serve them on a regular basis, and I think people will say good things about me when I leave.”

One has to wonder about the sudden resignation of Chief Michna. The Mayor and Council have always been involved in the day to day operations of the Police Department (regardless of policy and procedures). It was never more evident or blatant when the Mayor, Williams and two other Councilmember’s wanted to fire Chief Paul Rex. The history of elected officials in Magnolia wanting it their way has always been and may still be an issue.

We have a Mayor having tickets dismissed along with warrants, threatening people not to come through town along with using employees to do his bidding. Just like Councilwoman Williams, an email from Patsy Williams to then City Marshall Carpenter saying, Williams has protected her (Carpenter’s) job for five (5) years. Why was this said by Williams, what does she (Williams) mean she protected Carpenters job? Is that why Rex was let go? What does Williams know about Law Enforcement? But another email sent to Carpenter from Williams in reference to getting rid of Drake (City secretary), Help me out with this Thelma Jean (Carpenter) please. I am getting the sence that LuAnn is working for the OTHER side now, Williams should have to explain herself what does this mean OTHER side?. Does anyone see the correlation with how Williams works? She uses City employee’s to further her unethical ways to fire people (to get her own way)? It’s apparent that’s what happened with Rex and many others City employees when Williams and the Mayor want their way.

Even when Williams got her own way and the City hired Cunningham (if Williams had her way Rex would have never been hired, she wanted Cunningham back then) it just goes to show Williams knows nothing about Law Enforcement (I am just a woman). Cunningham and the Mayor’s boy Smith were indicted (yes the Mayor also used employee’s). It’s no different with City Managers, Williams and the Mayor ran off Jane Miller and look what we got when Williams and the Mayor get their way, Carlisle and now Kelley. Look at the shape we are in. One only has to look at the track record and follow the emails to see there is a big problem, and it goes even further with who gets their water cut off and who doesn’t, who pays their tickets or who gets arrest on warrants, who gets fired and who plays the game.

All the above is fact not only fact but UNETHICAL and downright wrong. It’s time for a change.

Williams is a woman who is willing to harm anybody who gets in her way. She, in my humble opinion, is without honor and totally unfit to serve as council person. She is very much like Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi.

Sanders and Scott are Williams’ puppets that don’t have an ounce of back bone to stand against her.

All three are dangerous to the city.

Magnolia had a good, honest police chief in Ronnie Cunningham, but unfortunately the crooked people in that town ran him out.I have personally known him and his family for 50 yrs.and he is a good man.He served with my brother on H.P.D. for many many years before going to Magnolia. We tried to warn him of the corruption in Magnolia but as a dedicated officer he went and tried to help anyway. These little towns have nothing but H.P.D. rejects who can not make it as a real policeman. This is why I moved away from there and do not worry,,,I will not be back....Just my opinion.........

Magnolia may have been named for the beautiful flower but it is as dirty and rotten as a landfill.
Leaving Magnolia is probably the smartest thing Michna could ever do for himself.

If you are referring to the crooked people in Magnolia ran the good honest Police Chief out of town, I know you are referring to the Mayor and Patsy Williams and probably some other council members. They have always had their hands in to the Police Departments business. The Police Chief went along for the ride with the Mayor and Williams and it is unfortunate that the Police Chief was not able to say no, and run his department without influence from the crooked people when he knew what was happening was wrong (power corrupts and absolute power corrupts absolutely). Instead the Chief took a ride believing he was untouchable and the Mayor and Williams let their Chief stand alone. The Chief could have fought it if he did nothing wrong but instead he took the deal, I wonder why.

What would have come out if the case would have went to court? What’s in a family name?
You got it from your father it was all he had to give so it’s yours to use and Cherish for as long as you may live.

If you lost the watch he gave you it can always e replaced; but a black mark on your name can never be erased.

It was clean the day you took it and a worthy name to bear when he got it from his father there was no dishonor there.

So make sure you guard it wisely after all is said and done you’ll be glad the name is spotless when you give it to your son.

So if the good honest Chief would have done like Chief Paul Rex did and not let the Mayor and Williams tell him what to do the only thing he would have lost would have been his JOB.

A 20, 30 year retired H.P.D. officer who comes to a small town like Magnolia obviously isn't an H.P.D. reject. They are experienced and ready to do good work for a small town.
