| Tomball, Magnolia ISD won’t show Obama speech |
|
Amid public debate over President Obama’s scheduled live speech geared toward the nation’s school children Sept. 8, both Tomball and Magnolia school districts have decided not to air the live broadcast.
In a press release dated Sept. 3, Tomball ISD acknowledged the topics that would be discussed according to the White House, which include the importance of education and staying in school, but stated that the time the live speech is scheduled for conflicts with the school’s lunch schedule. “The live internet broadcast is scheduled during our campus lunch periods, which makes it impossible to air to all students at that time. Therefore, Tomball ISD will not be showing the live broadcast,” the press release stated. It went on to say that the broadcast will be electronically captured for viewing by district administrators, who will then decide if the speech is grade level appropriate for students in social studies courses. If they agree that it is appropriate, teachers may incorporate the speech into future lesson plans. However, the press release goes on to say that parents will be notified before the speech is viewed in class and “be given an opportunity to complete an opt out form for their children.” Magnolia ISD issued a similar statement regarding the speech. “In response to the concerns of parents and community members, Magnolia ISD will not be showing the live address of the President on Tuesday, September 8, 2009,” it stated. “The district will review the webcast to evaluate its educational appropriateness. At that point, a decision will be made regarding the applicable use of the speech within MISD curriculum. Should the district decide to use any of the address, parents, after having been afforded the opportunity to preview the webcast, may choose whether or not to have their child opt out of the lesson.” Magnolia ISD School Board President Glenn Addison said Sept. 4 that the school district reversed an original decision to show the speech, saying they decided “it was too controversial.” President Obama’s speech will be broadcast live across the nation at noon, eastern standard time, Sept. 8.

HOW EMBARRa*sING. It is truly an embarra*sment that these school districts refused to show an encouraging message from the president of our country saying little more than "Less XBox, more hard work." There was nothing "controversial" or even political about the president's speech. It was also made available online with plenty of time for school officials to view the speech and realize how appropriate AND patriotic it was. This had nothing to with interference of lunch schedules or cla*s disruption-- this has to do with political bias. CNN researched school districts refraining from broadcasting the live speech, and nearly all were from voting precincts who overwhelming opposed Obama in the presidential election. I do not even know how else to address this issue. The representatives of these school districts acted both immaturely and unpatriotically, and should truly be ashamed.
