| Tomball ISD buying Woodlands land for future school construction |
|
With the Tomball Independent School District finally seeing a light at the end of its construction tunnel with the ongoing work of the district’s second high school, administrators and school board members are looking even further into the future. At its Sept. 15 meeting, the Tomball ISD Board of Trustees approved an agenda item that would allow Superintendent John Neubauer to initiate the purchase of nearly 40 acres from The Woodlands Land Development Company. According to district spokesperson Staci Stanfield, the future purchase will allow Tomball ISD to build another school in The Woodlands. This year, the district opened Creekside Forest Elementary off Kuykendahl Road, the first district school to service the far southern portion of The Woodlands, which lies within the Tomball ISD boundaries. While the district has announced no price, Stanfield said the purchase would be paid for by district funds. “We don’t have a price on the property right now,” Stanfield said. “The board only approved the superintendent to move forward on it (the purchase). So we don’t have a price right now.” Once the district and The Woodlands Land Development Company come to terms on a price, the purchase will go back to the board of trustees for approval, Stanfield added. The pending 40-acre purchase by the district will be the fourth land acquisition in The Woodlands, including Creekside Forest. The site is located at the corner of Kuykendahl and Creekside Green Trail, near the new elementary school. With the three additional land purchases, Tomball ISD now has the potential to build another elementary school, as well as intermediate and junior high schools. The Woodlands Land Development Company donated the property that currently includes Creekside Forest Elementary, nearly 13 acres. Tomball ISD later purchased 13.466 acres near the intersection of Kuykendahl and Augusta Pines at a cost of $383,000, and later 13.9 acres at near the intersection of Kuykendahl and Nursery Road for $462,000. While the latest land pending purchase by the district will be the largest of the four school sites in The Woodlands, Stanfield said it would not be large enough to build a high school on. Stanfield also said the district has not yet decided what type of schools will be built on the properties acquired by the district. She added that any schools built on the land currently owned, and soon to be owned, by the district will need to be funded by future bond money.
