Council names Ibarra interim police chief

ibarra

At a Sept. 29 special meeting, the Magnolia city council named former city marshal Domingo Ibarra as the interim police chief.

In a 4-0 vote, the council voted to appoint Ibarra after also voting unanimously to formally accept police chief Paul Michna’s 30-day resignation notice that was submitted to the city on Sept. 3.

Councilmember Todd Kana was not present at the meeting.

Ibarra was chosen as city marshal at a city council meeting July 28 and began his work at the city on Aug. 3.

In a memorandum endorsing Ibarra from City Administrator Ryan Kelley to Mayor Jimmy Thornton and the city council, Kelley said that Michna also recommended considering Ibarra to fill the position.

“He spoke highly of him,” Kelley wrote.

Michna’s last day as chief was officially Oct. 2.

An employment contract with the city has not yet been set, Ibarra said.

Ibarra, a resident of The Woodlands, previously spent more than 25 years in law enforcement in Corpus Christi.

Ha, ha, ha.....funny. A Hispanic from THE Woodlands is now going to be our pitifuly police chief of our pitiful embra*sing town....why don't we just give up and disincorporate and do away with City taxes. Our City Government, if you want to actually call it that, is a poor example of anything known to resemble a municipal government. Now this.

Disincoporation would be the best thing for Magnolia. Look at the east side of the non incorporated area of Magnolia. It has business striving and growing everyday. New and clean businesses.

Give the new Chief a chance and see how he does. It won’t be long to figure out if he is going to fall into the Mayors and Williams way of policing (the good old boy system). Hopefully he has read what happened to the last Chief and Captain and will be able to say no to the Mayor and Council (like Chief Rex did) and run the Department like it is supposes to be run.
I wonder, is no one else at the department qualified for the position. There have been officers there for some time, I guess they do not promote within, or maybe they are handpicked by Thornton and Williams like the last Chief and other administrator.
We will see.
