Car accident leaves MHS student dead, others injured

A 16-year-old Magnolia High School student died and three others were injured after a head-on collision Sept. 27.

The accident occurred around 4:30 p.m. on FM 2978 about 13 miles east of Magnolia, according to a police report.

Magdaleno Pinon, 16, was driving a 2003 Honda Pilot traveling northbound on FM 2978 when he attempted to pass a car in a no-passing zone and collided head-on with a 2007 Volvo SUV traveling south.

Pinon was pronounced dead at the scene, according to the DPS report.

Three teenage passengers in his car were injured in the accident.

Randy Trejo, 15, of Magnolia, was taken to Memorial Hermann Hospital in The Woodlands with a broken shoulder and bruises. Jessica Torres, 14, of Magnolia, was also taken to Memorial Hermann in The Woodlands with compound fractures to her left arm.

Sandra Ramirez, 16, of Magnolia, was taken by life-flight to Memorial Hermann Hospital in Houston in serious condition with blunt force head trauma.

All three teens were not wearing seatbelts when the accident occurred, police reported.

Both the driver of the Volvo, Anette Tanche-Larsen of The Woodlands, and her passenger, Lisa Tanche-Larsen, 13, were taken to Tomball Regional Hospital with bruises and burns. Both were wearing seatbelts when the accident occurred and have since been released from the hospital.

The police report did not state if either vehicle was speeding at the time of the incident. The posted speed limit where the accident occurred is 55 miles per hour.

Magnolia High School associate principal Panette Kelch said the school provided counseling all week for students.

“Any student that needed to be consoled or knew the student quite well, they were invited to go to the library and we had several counselors there,” Kelch said. “We met together, prayed and let them visit and go through the grieving process.”

Kelch said “quite a few” students participated in the counseling sessions, which closed with a prayer session in the library at the end of the day.

A viewing for Pinon was held on Sept. 30 and a service followed on Oct. 1 at Magnolia Funeral Home.

Fundraisers have been started through Magnolia High School to help the student’s family with funeral expenses, Kelch said.
