A fire broke out in a Magnolia mobile home the night of Oct.7, killing a 51-year-old woman.

The fire broke out around 8:15 p.m. said Scott Burlin, assistant fire marshal of Montgomery County. Several fire units responded to the blaze, which occurred in a home on Laurel Lane in the Hazy Hollow neighborhood.

The victim, identified by officials as Sandra Hargett, 51, was found by firefighters in her bed.

Officials believe Hargett died from smoke inhalation while still in her bed, according to preliminary autopsy results released by the Montgomery County Fire Marshal’s office.

After investigating, officials found that the fire started in the woman’s bed, which they believe was a result of smoking. They also found that the home did not have any working smoke detectors, which may have saved her life.

Firefighters were able to contain the fire to the master bedroom and put it out quickly.

Hargett’s 16-year-old son Jack was across the street with friends when the fire started and attempted, along with neighbors, to get his mother out of the house but the smoke and strength of the fire prevented them from doing so.

Burlin said he did not know of any other injuries.

Officials said a family dog was still missing, but were unable to confirm if it had died in the blaze.

Burlin said the mobile home was a total loss, due to main damage to the master bedroom and the smoke damage the rest of the house sustained. In addition, “most if not all belongings were lost,” he said.

The surviving son, Jack, also lost his father within the past five years, Burlin said, and has a 23-year-old sister that was at the scene the night of the fire.
