Tomball man hit, killed by truck while walking down street

A Tomball man was killed Nov. 30 after he was hit by a car while walking down a street.

According to the Tomball Police Department, Richard Doyle Strange, 50, was walking in the 23600 block of Snook Lane when he was struck by a motorist driving a 2005 Chevrolet Avalanche.

Sgt. Rick Grassi said the driver was traveling north and that Strange was walking on the same side of the road with his back to traffic.

“He (the driver) knew he hit something, but he didn’t realize what he hit,” Grassi said. “He turned around and saw the guy (Strange) and called for help.”

Emergency medical personnel responded to the scene and found Strange lying on the roadside with severe injuries. According to the Tomball PD, Strange was taken by ambulance to Tomball Regional Hospital where he was later pronounced dead.

Grassi said Strange was wearing “all black” and coupled with the darkness, “really made it hard to see the guy.” He added that there is no sidewalk, but there is a grassy walking area next to the road.

The driver was not charged, and no charges would be forthcoming, Grassi added.

Grassi cautioned those who may be walking near streets to keep in mind that it is now getting darker earlier and to wear brighter clothing so that drivers will be more able to see pedestrians.

This is the second recorded fatality accident in Tomball for 2009.  Four traffic related fatalities were reported in Tomball in 2008.
