Cypress couple proud parents of first baby born in New Year

Tomball Regional Hospital had to wait a little longer than normal to welcome its first baby of the New Year and the new decade, than it has in the past. But Alyson and Brad Johnson certainly did not mind.

Alyson gave birth to a healthy Riley at 8:58 a.m. the morning of Jan. 2. The newborn weighed 6 pounds and a half ounce.

“We’re doing great,” Alyson said. “We stayed two nights and went home on the fourth.”

Riley’s arrival was somewhat of a surprise to Brad and Alyson. Their first child together was not expected until Alyson’s due date of Jan. 23. But when Alyson, who works in outside sales for a medical company, began to go into labor shortly before the New Year, it appeared as though the family might have a second Jan. 1 birthday.

Alyson explained that her mother was born on New Year’s Day.

“I talked to her that morning,” Alyson said, “and told her it didn’t look like I was going to have it on her birthday.”

Alyson and her husband, who works as an engineer for Texas Instruments, currently live in Cypress and have been married for about two and a half years.

Riley was delivered by Dr. Nelly Heiman and joins a family that includes two step-siblings who live with Alyson and Brad.
