Major construction on Magnolia’s planned Unity Park and downtown improvements such as Magnolia Stroll and Sullivan Park are underway in Magnolia.

The Stroll, a walking path one block west of FM 1774 that runs south from FM 1488 to Sanders Street at Magnolia Junior High 6th Grade Campus, runs along the back alleyway of downtown businesses along FM 1774.

“As of today, we’ll have all of our street crossings done and tile laid. Most of the concrete work will be done this week or first part of next week, so you’ll start seeing the lights going up and the walkway arches going up,” Magnolia 4A Economic Development Corporation President Jonny Williams said last week.

Although the projects are progressing now, persistent rain in the past month set back the projects.

“The rain has just killed us, it’s had us in a real mess,” Williams said. “I would say after next week, you should see quite a few visible changes.”

Landscaping, benches and other additions that will accompany the walkway are in the works as well.

Over at Unity Park, the rain has been a factor as well, preventing trucks from getting in the property.

But last week crews began construction in preparation for where the pavilion will be built and doing underground drainage. An observation platform has already been constructed, said Williams.

“We should be through with downtown things by mid-March or the first of April,” he said, adding that new playground fixtures and renovated bathrooms at Sullivan Park should be done by then as well.
