| Shooter gets life in prison for murder of Waller convenience store clerk |
|
One man has been sentenced to life in prison for the shooting death of a Waller convenience store clerk, while the fate of his accomplice has yet to be determined. Judge Albert McCaig Jr. of the 506th District Court sentenced Mars Weidemann on Jan. 21 to life in prison for the murder of Anwar Tahir, 53, during an armed robbery that occurred on April 15, 2008. Darryl Layne Norris, 26, was also convicted of murder in the case, but according to Waller County Chief Deputy John Kremmer, his sentencing has been postponed until May. Both Norris and Weidemann were originally charged with capital murder, but plead guilty to a lesser murder charge in order to avoid the death penalty, Kremmer said. Tahir was shot and killed while working at Hamner's Country Store, located at the intersection of FM 1488 and Field Store Road. According to the Waller County Sheriff's Office, Norris and Weidemann entered the store at approximately 10 p.m., nearly the time the store closes and demanded money. While the robbery was taking place, Tahir was shot and killed by Weidemann, Kremer said, while Norris also brandished a weapon. The two fled the scene with the money they took from the store. An ensuing investigation by the Waller County Sheriff's Office, the Texas Rangers and the FBI resulted in the arrest of Weidemann and Norris about a week later. The two lived off of FM 1488 east of Hempstead, where they were arrested. At the time of their apprehension, investigators reported finding the murder weapon used in the incident. Norris previously had been convicted of aggravated robbery in Harris County, while Weidemann at the time was on probation for aggravated assault with a deadly weapon in Washington County.
