New Woodforest road to connect south Montgomery County communities

fish creek A groundbreaking ceremony marked the start of construction on an overpass that will finally connect the communities of south Montgomery County, providing increased mobility and enhancing economic growth.

Pct. 2 County Commissioner Craig Doyal, Operations Manager Charlie Riley and other area leaders were present at the ceremony held the morning of Jan. 28 at the Welcome Lodge of the master-planned Woodforest Community in Montgomery.

More than 50 people turned out for the event, which provided information on the Woodforest Community as well as the Fish Creek Thoroughfare and other recent road projects.

“We see it alleviating traffic off Honea-Egypt and I-45,” said Kristi Steward, marketing director for Woodforest.

The overpass is the final piece of the puzzle for the entire Fish Creek Thoroughfare project, which, once the overpass is finished, will provide north/south access from FM 2920 in Tomball to SH 105 in Conroe.

“It’s a great project,” Doyal said. “It ties all of south Montgomery County together. It will bring businesses and people to the area and connect everything.”

The overpass will cross existing railroad tracks and FM 2854, connecting the Fish Creek Thoroughfare to the existing McCaleb Road and providing access to SH 105. It will have two lanes and will span about 900 feet, with about 1,700 feet in total length, including approaches.

Doyal added that eventually, the north-south roadway will connect from SH 105 to the Grand Parkway once construction of that thoroughfare continues in the area.

According to Woodforest, the project will cost an estimated $3.87 million and will take about a year to complete. Funding for the overpass is split between the County, which will spend around 1.1 million, the Houston-Galveston Area Council, which will put in about 2 million and TXDot, which will contribute around 1.5 million.Rozco Contracting out of Humble was awarded the contract for the overpass.

Last spring, the opening of the Fish Creek Thoroughfare, a roadway that forks off from Honea-Egypt road north of FM 1488 and runs north through the community of Woodforest to FM 2854, created a parallel north-south corridor to I-45, alleviating traffic for drivers.
