| Tomball FFA show brings in nearly $190,000 for students, program |
|
Despite the biting cold that permeated the Tomball High School ag barn and chilled everything but the animals, the school's FFA program and its students enjoyed a successful Show and Sale Jan. 29 and 30. FFA Instructor Sommer Thomas said this year's auction brought $189,300 to the school's students and FFA program.
"It actually went very well," Thomas said. "(The total auction amount) was up slightly. For as cold as it wsa, we had a real good turn out and we had some new buyers." The event's big winner was senior Dyllan Schaub(pictured above) who won grand champion steer and earned $13,000 at the live auction. Schaub was one of approximately 230 FFA students who showed their projects at this year's show, a number that represents approximately 95 percent of the FFA program's total members, Thomas said. "We know he had a pretty decent steer," Thomas said. "It's always one man's opinion, it gets to be tough when there's close ones." Reserve Grand Steer went to Bethan Whitten, who earned $6,000 in the live auction. Thomas explained that students get back 90 percent of the auction amount their project sells for. The remaining 10 percent goes back to the FFA program to help fund acitivity's such as out of town trips and career development events throughout the year. The students raised broilers, lambs, rabbits, steers, swine and turkeys. The Tomball High School FFA chapter is the tenth largest out of 985 chapters statewide. The following were other winners from this year's FFA Show and Sale: Grand Champion Rabbits - Brittany Parker - $2,800
