Magnolia council takes aim at budget cuts

Faced with a recent audit that revealed the City of Magnolia’s deficit more than tripled since the last report in July 2009, council members and staff are taking a hard line to get the city back into fiscal shape.

At a Feb. 22 city council meeting, members sent a message to staff that budget cuts must take place — and soon.

“I think we need to make a decision as soon as possible. We can’t wait two weeks, we can’t,” said council member John Bramlett. “Make some decisions, the time is now.”

Mayor Jimmy Thornton said city staff was asked to look at the budget and trim what they could in order to save money.

The staff and council discussed several different potentially cost-cutting measures the city could take to save money, including cutting down on cleaning services for city hall, centralized purchasing of office supplies, reducing city hall to be open four days a week, selling used police department and city vehicles and reorganizing the municipal court structure.

Three cuts the city has already made include the police department’s lieutenant position, formerly occupied by Bo Crabtree, and two other department positions.

The council said they had already potentially saved around $230,000 by current estimates.

A special city council meeting was scheduled for the morning of Saturday, Feb. 27 to discuss in more detail cost-cutting measures and budget amendments. Executive session evaluations of city employees also took place at the meeting.

Actions taken in that meeting were not available as of press time.

Cuts will not help if those that hold the purse strings are allowed to go unchecked. They moved monies without putting anything on the
AGENDA. If important issues would have been put on the AGENDA more than likely a lot of things would not have occurred. They did not want anyone to know they were robbing peter or the court technology fund to pay paul, and others when they knew they were over budget. Yet Williams tells you "We are in the BLACK" because she cut a cup of coffee, really Mrs. Williams. It's not funny any more. In a vert short time this council and Mayor have managed to bankrupt the City and have fired or let go more employee's, I guess they want to get rid of those that helped them get rid of Jane Miller,Paul Rex and Tom Conklin. Just like they paid Cunningham and Smith off. Who in their right minds would pay two employees off for what they did. There is no loyalty amoung corrupt politians.

I don't think any of the recent employee departures had anything to do with Miller, Rex and Conklin. I do think that this Mayor,Council and City Administrator have caused serious financial harm to the city. They sit upon their council throne and approve funding for things without ever asking if they actually have the money to spend or either their city administrator has told them they have the money when they did not. Either way, all are responsible for the financial problems of the city.
If they think cutting employees is the answer then they will need to cut just as many in the future as they have in the recent past to help with the shortfall. That's not going to happen. Why didn't they resend the raises that Williams, Sanders and Scott approved? They couldn't afford them in the first place but yet they are still paying out that money now.
These people are like bulls in a china closet.

What about this employee and councilmember, Thelma I (Williams), saved your job for the past five years from TC, don't fool yourself, there were employee's and councilmembers that did Miller,Rex,and Conklin wrong along with many other employees who lost their jobs when the council had to cut jobs for financial reasons, sound familar and then turned right around and gave the police department the biggest raise ever.Smith and Thornton, Smith went from officer to Captain. There were many players on both sides. They even made Chief Rex work a regular shift and the deficit was no where near this one. Don't be fooled by those screaming wolf.

I have no doubt that political games were played that allowed some people to keep their jobs and others to be kicked out. Those games have been played for about 18 years now and will continue to be played until members of this council are voted out or lawfully removed.

I agree, they need to go. Just how much money has been spent on their unethical decision to take away ones livelyhood on lies, rumors and hate. Put everyones employee history on the table for all to see for the past six years and you will see that these so called leaders were unjustified in their actions and it was their immoral decisions that cost the tax payers a ton of money, I guess an open records request will need to asked for on the amount that has beeen spent on legal fees and the amount pending on suits and the amount paid out, you know the City's insurance would have had to go up. They just find ways to throw away the City's money. It's their short comings and arrogants that has made them who they are. I would not want to be them.

You hit the nail on the head with just three words.....lies, rumors, hate. The important question is how much longer will the citizens allow this type of leadership and representation?

The leaders are only making the cuts so that they can continue with the MUSIC FESTIVAL and other indeavors more important than one's livelihood. If you have not gone to SAVE MAGNOLIA and listen to the audio tape of the council meeting in reference to THE MUSIC FESTIVAL check it out. ITS PRICLESS

A questions was brought up in the council meeting if the city was going to operate like it did last year or did they learn from their mistakes. Learn from their mistakes, you have to be kidding.

They (WIlliams and Kelley) continue to deceive the citizens and even the members of council to this day. In the meeting(AUDIO) I listened to at SAVE MAGNOLIA, Williams knew that the Festival was going to be held in GRIMES COUNTY. SHE SAYS "Don't ask me how I knew I just did" ( pretty impressive) She doesn't even lie well!!! She then makes a statement "I think the contracts have all ready been signed" NO she knew the contracts were signed. And when the gentlemen said the check was signed, THE LEADERS quickly wanted to vote and said that they were going to discuss the matter in executive session (SO they could get their lies straight). The GENTELMEN said before they cut him off YOU signed the check RYAN and who was the SECOND SIGNATURE on that $35,000.00 check?????????

That why the city is in the shape it's in you have leaders running and side stepping the process and making decisions on their own. And Williams probably said she could convince the rest of the council to go along with her decision. $35,000.00 DOLLARSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS. MISTAKE " Is it any wonder the city is in the shapes its in?
