September 8th 2009 ref giving raises when the City was in the red.
Council member Sanders states: "I would like to speak on behalf of our Police Department. Having been in law enforcement, I've always kinda been partial to them and I'll admit it. But, when I first came to Magnolia we probably had the worst Police Department in the state, for a city of our size and now we've the best! And you can not keep those young highly trained dedicated officers if you don't pay them a salary commencement to what the other cities are paying them. And if we start losing those officers you not going to get the standard of officers that we have now to come take their place. So we need to really consider that in this budget that we as I say were the best Police Department in the state for a city of our size and should these officers not go along with not getting a raise we will not get officers of their caliber to come take their place. Oh my goodness you (Sanders) knew the City was in the red or should have known, really Council member Sanders, THE BEST. You see, Mr. Sanders we see right through the way you people (Council) Spin everything, you talk about years past but give no examples or references, about the worst. You prey on the citizens and you want us to believe you know what you are talking about, but we know better. I have provided you with incidents that you consider are the best and it’s scary. These are the same officers that took illegal orders to go after citizens, and the only officer with integrity that knew it was wrong was Cpl. Alexander (cost the City money). The same officers that played chicken with brand new Chargers in the school parking lot and crashed them (cost the City money). This is the same officers that made a false arrest on a man on Michael Street in reference to a phone line (costs the City money). The best Magnolia has ever had? And you say the City has to pay these officers in order to keep them? Mr. Sanders, please check what other Cities are paying that is conducive to the size of Magnolia then come back and share it with us. You are doing the citizens a great injustice when you spin your opinion on us; you have not done your homework. And you are just one of the reasons we are in the shape we are in. I don’t know about the rest of the citizens in Magnolia but, if this is the best of the best I would want to know if an order was really given (the Chief and Captain cut a deal what does that say). And if it was, why wouldn’t all of the officer come forward when they were told to be on the lookout for certain citizens. This goes to the heart of being an officer, it’s all about integrity. So what does that tell us about the best of the rest who are still employed by the City? Would they do it again? Could we be the next target? Maybe Mr. Sanders in his infinite wisdom will enlighten us and tell us, was there an order given? Write comment
