Magnolia finalizing plans for long awaited city park

A project more than three years in the works is finally nearing completion as the City of Magnolia is finalizing plans to build a new city park.

During its February meeting, the Magnolia City Council passed a resolution officially designating 30 acres of land, which the city purchased from Magnolia ISD, for “open space/wetland use.”

Of the 30 acres, which is located along Nichols Sawmill Road, 7 have been designated for the construction of the city’s new park.

This recent resolution was for the purpose of complying with the terms of a grant that was awarded to the city by the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department.

The city was awarded $415,000 in grant money to help build the park. The money has to be matched by the city.

Phase 1 of the park’s construction is scheduled to begin shortly and will focus primarily on building the infrastructure. Projects in Phase 1 include a fishing lake, excavation of the general area, clearing of the land, paving of the primary roads and the construction of a pavilion with restroom and concessions.

Phase 1 will cost approximately $2.5 million.

4A Community Development Corporation President Jonny Williams said development of the new park is progressing “quickly.” He added that the pavilion and access roads will most likely be completed in time for a planned fireworks display on July 4.

Since 1979, the Texas Legislature has made funds available to communities for the purpose of providing recreational lands and facilities. These funds are derived from a portion of sales tax on sporting goods.

The current Magnolia City Park sits on a small plot of land at the intersection of FM 1488 and FM 1774.
