A workshop to help pre-teens and teens make responsible choices concerning teen pregnancy, sexually transmitted diseases, drugs and alcohol abuse and other unhealthy behaviors is scheduled for April 3-5.

The Cooperative Extension Program at Prairie View A&M University is sponsoring the CHOICES retreat that will be held at the H. S. Estelle 4-H Camp in Huntsville.

“Building Esteem as Prevention” is the theme of this year’s retreat.

“The retreat is designed to help youth ages improve health habits and develop a greater understanding of the consequences of unhealthy behaviors,” Sonja Davis, program specialist- 4-H & Youth Development, said. “With approximately three million
teens being infected with a sexually transmitted disease annually, teen pregnancy on the rise and more youth experimenting with drugs at an earlier age, there is definitely a need for programs of this type.”

Participants will reside at the camp for the weekend and attend workshops on self-respect and respect for others, STD/AIDS, healthy dating practices (social networks), and the effects of drugs and alcohol.

In addition to workshops, group discussions, leadership and team building exercises will be offered utilizing the low and high ropes course at the campsite.  The retreat will be interactive and provide participants with a wealth of information to promote abstaining from unhealthy behaviors and making responsible choices.
