The riders, who were accompanied by 14 wagons, stopped in Tomball for the city’s annual Trail Riders Reception on Feb. 24. The riders stopped as they were making their way to the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo Downtown Parade, which took place Feb. 28.

The Trail Riders Reception has been hosted in Tomball since the 1970s to show the city’s support for the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo.

During the event, the trail riders were able to take a break from riding their horses and wagons and mingle with the other participants. The riders were also on hand to answer questions from the public.

The Sam Houston Trail Riders have been making the 71-mile ride from Montgomery to the downtown rodeo since 1955. This year marks the 54th anniversary of the first ride.

David Supac was this year’s Trail Boss for the Sam Houston Trail Ride and Earl Blackmon was the Assistant Trail Boss.

During the trail riders’ stop in Tomball, Supac, along with Mayor Gretchen Fagan, awarded scholarships to graduating seniors at Montgomery High School.

Entertainment was provided for the riders, as were snacks and drinks. The Tomball Promenaders also put on a performance during the reception.

During their ride into Houston, the Sam Houston Trail Riders enjoyed several scheduled dances along the trail.
