From the Book of Clifford

Have you eaten anything lately that you had before? How often do you drink a cup of coffee or even water? Well the truth is we re-do, re-hash and eat the same things over and over again. It’s kinda like some of my stories. Even though I have told this story before, some people want to hear it over and over again so here we go. For others it may be your first time.

I had a good laugh one day with a high school friend. We have been out of school for more than 35 years and she had never heard the whole story. When she heard it she laughed rally hard, but I promised I would never reveal her name without permission.

I started school when I was 5 years old. My freshman year in high school meant I was probably the youngest freshman in my class. Sometimes this bothered me, given the

fact that everybody else was given freedoms that took me a little longer to earn.

I was too young to really handle a lot of the problems high school brought to me, like dating girls! When I would meet a new girl I was too shy and embarrassed to talk to them because I knew in my heart of hearts they would never go out with me ’cause I was younger than them.

I only found out after the fact I could have asked a few of them out and they would have went out with me. It’s not really any loss to me because God placed me with the love of my life regardless of who I wanted to date.

I was really intimidated by the older women in the school! You know the ones. The sophomores, juniors and seniors! When an older woman talked to me my mouth would get dry and my palms would sweat and I swore my knees knocked. I was a skinny runt in those days and I was very confused in my identity.

I road a Cushman Motor Scooter while wearing cowboy boots, but I also attempted to have long hair. I would have probably tried to have a beard, but I didn't start shaving until my first child was born. I liked surfing, but I also enjoyed raising cattle. I guess I was the only goat roping surfer dude in school.

One day while I was in biology class this particular young lady walked into an empty lab room where I was working and slumped down on a stool next to me. She uttered my name as she hung her head. I was terrified. Why did this older woman want to talk to me?

I was petrified with fear that I may actually have to carry on a conversation with this older and extremely gorgeous woman! I immediately began to tremble and sweat. As she uttered my name a second time, I glanced at her and suddenly saw her begin to slide off the lab stool she was sitting on. She began a descent to the floor and I realized this girl was passing out on me!

My life flashed before me! Was it my breath? Had I taken a bath? Did my manly passion cause this older female to swoon at my presence and make her pass out in my shadow?

In a matter of nanoseconds I jumped from my stool next to her and grabbed her the best I could before she hit the floor, knowing she would hurt herself if she fell all the way. As I grabbed for her, the fall caused her body to twist away from me and I grabbed her from the back putting my arms under her arms.

This movement caused my hands to naturally land on the front of her body and my hands immediately fell on her...on her… well, you know, my hands grabbed her...well anyway you get the picture. Here I was, with a woman passed out in my arms and my hands were firmly placed on her back, under her arms and on a place that I can’t describe.

After hearing the commotion my teacher walked in the room, his jaw dropped at the sight and all he could utter to me was “My God boy, what are you doing?”

I was speechless but he finally realized I had a dilemma on my hands (no pun intended) and he called the school nurse.

I never did really find out why she passed out, but when I talked to her the other day she had never, in all the years heard the full story. We both laughed.

It’s good to know after all these years many of my high school friends are still in town. Don’t even try to ask who she was! I’ll never reveal her name!
