Okay, okay, this is a guy thing and some people may not find this funny, but Tiger Woods ain’t got a thing on a guy that I know. Tiger has been in the news a lot lately, and while I do not agree with his lifestyle, my hat’s off to the guy for his golfing abilities. However, I do know one guy that can outdo him! I will not reveal this man’s name as I am sworn to secrecy, but if we think Tiger is a good golfer, I wish we could have witnessed a recent shot on the golf course that I heard about.
Two guys were golfing and two other guys showed up, so they agreed to play a foursome. The first two guys told the second guys they were not very good. As the game progressed, the second guys moved ahead of the first two because sure ‘nuff, they realized they had hooked up with some double and triple par golfers.
As the second set had moved on down the fairway, one of the guys left behind took a good hard swing at his golf ball with a nine iron. “Whack” as the ball flew about seventy five yards down the fairway at a good fast pace, hitting the ground and bouncing once, twice and then “zap,” right between the back window and roof top of the golf cart ahead and unfortunately hitting someone in the back of the head that was driving the moving cart! Fortunately, the hit did not cause major damage but, of course, it hurt really bad.
The bad golfer was able to hit a moving target at seventy five yards and less than ten inches wide and he didn’t even aim…Wow! Okay, I know I am making light of someone else’s injury! That’s why I said it was a guy thing. We are very thankful that a serious injury didn’t occur.
I was sitting in my office having a conversation with my friend, Barry Milner. When my friends and I get together, the subject of world, local or family events always seems to be brought into the conversation. Whether it be politics, world events, religion, understanding women or finances, something seems to cause someone to get a conversation started between guys. My daddy’s favorite opening line with people was “Are ya’ll gettin’ any rain up your way?” and that will usually get people talking.
Well, Barry and I were talking about the ignorance of some people who believe some of the things coming out of Washington. We discussed various issues and the idea that we allow some of these people to even vote amazes us! Some of the voters haven’t studied the issues or the candidates, but vote simply because of a person’s name or looks and not because of their actual abilities to lead and think on their feet. During the conversation, while we were bantering back and forth, Barry said, “Well before people vote, maybe they need to be given a test so at least they know something about something!” When he said that, he and I looked at each other and began to laugh. The fact is, however, that some people don’t know anything about anything and should know something about something before we allow them to vote! How many people do you know that know nothing about nothing and are still voting? His very profound statement will be used by me on many occasions in the future.
Our conversation brought me back many years ago when my son and I were having one of those Father and Son conversations. I had told him several times to take care of something and I was eventually getting frustrated at him for ignoring my fatherly demands. I very forcefully told him to go get the issue taken care of and in his own frustration he came back with “Dad, I’m thinkin’ about thinkin’ about it!” Well, when the words came out of his mouth all we could do was laugh at such a dumb and silly statement. But the fact is, he was probably telling me the truth. He was not to the point of taking care of business yet, but he was simply thinking about thinking about it.
I get in those moods sometimes when I go to the ranch. I can sit on the back porch and look across the land and simply think about thinking and then suddenly the thinking comes to me. Understand? Me neither, but what difference does it make as long as we are all still thinkin’! Clifford
