From the Book of Clifford

Okay, okay, now listen up. The wishes you are about to read are my own wishes for the next ten years. They have nothing to do with this newspaper’s ideas, nothing to do with what my wife or family think, nothing to do with anything from anybody other than myself. You can call me wrong, prude, silly, or just downright dumb, but these are my own personal comments. Some people make New Year resolutions. These are not my resolutions. In random order and with no rhyme or reason, these are my wishes for the next ten years.

I wish texting in public would become illegal and un-popular unless someone would make a screen that did not light up every time it was opened. It really gets under my skin to be in a low light or darkened location like a movie or a quiet restaurant when all of a sudden your eyes are blasted with light by the person in front of you who is texting. If I knew I wouldn’t get thrown in jail, I would like to stare over that person’s shoulder and read their messages out loud.

I wish talking on the cell phone and texting would be banned while driving or within a hundred feet of other human beings.

I wish somebody would invent a legal device that shuts down the motor of a tailgater who gets within two car lengths of the back of your vehicle.

I wish parking lots did not have striping. You would be allowed to park any place and in any position you wanted. By having the stripes removed, I could not get upset at people who double park.

I wish underwear, both male and female, would no longer be used as outerwear. I also wish it were not illegal, but encouraged, to give someone a wedgie if you saw the tops of their underwear coming out the top of their pants.

I wish they would quit making cars that go a hundred miles an hour when the speed limit has never been that high in my lifetime.

I wish people would stop using camouflage clothing as fashion wear. My toes are getting real sore when I stub them on people’s camouflaged shoes and my knees are aching because I keep falling down when I trip over people who are in camouflaged clothes. I just can’t see them.

I wish the words “Yes ma’am, No ma’am, Yes sir and No sir” were part of a mandatory school curriculum. If a child fails to learn these words and properly use them at appropriate times then we should be allowed to keep them in the same grade until they learn otherwise.

I wish our government would get out of the business of private enterprise and allow those who are willing to sacrifice their blood, sweat and tears of self employment to freely operate in a truly free market. I also wish that if the chips fall hard and things just don’t work out for them, then “we the people” would be allowed to support them by whatever legal means are available and stop the continued waste of taxpayer dollars by the government bailing them out.

I wish cussing were still thought of as being vulgar and the exposure of filthy words that can be seen in public were outlawed.

I wish all tattoos were made with a special ink that faded within one year and I wish mostly sailors were still the only ones that got tattoos.

I wished we still dressed up for church in dressy clothes and I wish people would learn the difference between “going to the beach clothes” and church clothes. While I do enjoy dressing casual for church, there is a big difference between beach casual and dressy casual.

I wish movies were still made for entertainment and not for political statements and I wish they could be watched with scary parts in them and not vulgar and sadistic scenes. I also wish the love scenes were just kissing scenes that still left room for wonderment.

I wish more people read the word of God for their own personal teachings and not try to decipher some mystical meanings from the scriptures and call them entertainment.

I wish a little bell really would ring every time an angel got its wings. Maybe it would remind all of us what things are really important in this life.

Make 2010 and beyond your best years of your life!

Clifford
