| Salem cemetery to receive historical designation |
|
On Sept. 19 at 2 p.m., the Texas Historical Commission and the Salem Archives and Historical Research Center of Rose Hill will dedicate its historic cemetery and wildflower sanctuary. The official Texas state historical marker unveiled that day dates prior to the Civil War. Founding families and families of the interred are invited to attend this dedication. A small reception will follow at Salem Community Center Atrium. In 1869, George Scherer transferred property, including the cemetery, to Salem Evangelical Lutheran Church, when it changed names to the present Salem Lutheran Church of Rose Hill. Among those buried at the cemetery include veterans of military conflicts dating to the Civil War. Others interred include many of the early Rose Hill residents and other individuals who attended the church, but lived in nearby communities such as Cypress, Decker Prairie and Willow Creek. Set among trees and vegetation, Salem Lutheran Historical Cemetery remains active while continuing to serve as a record of the area's early settlers. The dedication will be held at Salem Historical Cemetery and Wildflower Sanctuary, 23555 1/2 Lutheran Cemetery Rd. in Tomball. Please RSVP to this occasion by contacting Salem Lutheran Church of Rose Hill at 281-351-8223 or This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it .
