Sheriff’s Office reports work-from-home Internet scam

The Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office detectives have discovered at least one local resident that has fallen victim to a contemporary Internet scam.

The victim completed an on-line application to work from home earning extra money by forwarding packages that are sent to his address to other parts of the country and abroad. The victim received pre-paid packing labels and received instructions to replace the labels on the packages he had received and re-ship them to their next destination.

The promised compensation was never received. Investigators have determined that the contents of the packages had been purchased fraudulently and shipped from place to place across the continent to make tracking and discovery more difficult by the authorities. The final destination for the packages was Kieve in the Ukraine.

The Sheriff’s Office urges everyone to use the internet cautiously and avoid becoming a victim.
