Health Department makes changes in school immunization requirements

On March 5 the Executive Commissioner on Health and Human Services approved several revisions to immunization requirements for students in Texas public and private schools. The changes were made to update Texas requirements so that they adhere more closely to the recommendations of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices. All of the changes will begin August 1, 2009 and will include:

  • Hepatitis A Vaccine: All students entering kindergarten will be required to have two doses of Hepatitis A vaccine.
  • Measles, Mumps, Rubella (MMR) Vaccine: All students entering kindergarten will be required to have two doses of MMR vaccine.
  • Varicella (Chickenpox) Vaccine: All students entering kindergarten and seventh grade will be required to have two doses of Varicella vaccine. A written statement from a parent or physician attesting to a child’s positive history of Varicella disease (Chickenpox) is acceptable in lieu of either dose.
  • Tetanus, Diphtheria and acellular Pertussis-containing Vaccine (Tdap): All students entering the seventh grade will be required to have one dose of Tdap vaccine if it has been five years since their last dose of a Tetanus-containing vaccine. Students in grades 8-12 are required to have a booster dose of Tdap if it has been 10 years since their previous dose of a Tetanus-containing vaccine. Td (Tetanus-Diphtheria) is acceptable in lieu of Tdap if a contraindication to pertussis exists.
  • Meningococcal Vaccine: All students entering seventh grade will be required to have one dose of meningococcal vaccine.

More information regarding these immunization changes, plus a Phase-In Schedule for each vaccine, is available at the web site of the Immunization Branch for the Texas Department of State Health Services at www.immunizetexas.com or through the customer service hotline at 800-252-9152.
