KOC council to host flag retirement ceremony

flag retirement The Knights of Columbus Council No. 11472, with the assistance of Cub Scout Pack 471 and Boy Scout Troop 471, will be holding a Flag Retirement Ceremony June 13 at 9 a.m. at the St. Anne Catholic School, located at 1111 S. Cherry St. in Tomball.

At left, members of Cub Scout Pack 471 and Boy Scout Troop 471, along with the Knights of Columbus, take part in a recent flag retirement ceremony.

The ceremony provides an opportunity for the community to properly retire their American flags that have become worn, torn or otherwise unpresentable.

As part of the ceremony the Council will also hold a free raffle for several new American flags, including the Grand Prize of a 3-foot-by-5-foot flag with a 20-foot aluminum pole.

The brass grommets collected from these retired flags, seen by many as a symbol of good luck, will be collected and offered to community members of the armed services, fire, police, and emergency medical services.
