| Harris County offers tips on space heater safety, Christmas tree recycling |
|
As the temperature drops, the Harris County Fire Marshal’s Office urges residents to exercise caution when using a space heater.
“Children knock over space heaters and may stick paper or toys in the grates,” Fire Marshal Mike Montgomery said. “Never leave children unattended in a room with a space heater.” Montgomery added that combustible materials should always be at least three feet from the heater and that open-face heaters should have a screen. Also, houses should always have working smoke alarms installed on each level of the home, in the hall outside bedrooms and in each bedroom. Visit the Fire Marshal’s Web site at hcfmo.net for more information on the proper use of electric and gas-fired heaters. The county is also currently holding a Christmas tree recycling program now through Jan. 9 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Mondays through Saturdays. Live trees can be dropped off at Doss Park, located at 2500 Frick Road in Houston. The trees should be bare and not flocked. The program is offered through Harris County Pct. 4 and the City of Houston’s Solid Waste Management Department. “Residents can feel good knowing they’ve disposed of their trees in an environmentally conscious manner,” Commissioner Jerry Eversole said.
