| Tomball, Magnolia offer up summer fun |

By Kristen Jones Contributing Writer As school draws to a close and temperatures rise, many local organizations are preparing for a fun and eventful summer. To relax and spend time with the whole family, the City of Tomball will be hosting three 2nd Saturdays at the Depot on June 11, July 9 and August 13 beginning at 6:30 p.m. at 201 S. Elm. Each of these evenings will offer live music, concessions, and a family film that will begin at dark. Bring lawn chairs and picnic baskets to soak up the summer. For more information, contact Rosalie Dillon at 281-610-2595. Walk Tomball will continue through the summer, beginning at 8 a.m. every Saturday morning at the Historic Depot. This weekly event is free and open to the public, providing an opportunity to stay healthy, connect with other members of the community, and enjoy the atmosphere of downtown Tomball. After the walk, participants are welcome to enjoy coffee at a local restaurant. To help battle the summer heat, there is no need to even leave the area. The Tomball Municipal Pool at Matheson Park is now open daily from noon to 8 p.m. The pool will be closed on Mondays, except for July 4th and Labor Day. Beginning August 25, the pool will open on weekends only through September 5. The Historic Depot in Downtown Tomball is open every Sunday from 1-5 p.m. and offers an educational and interesting look into Tomball’s rich history. Tours are also available and may be scheduled by calling 281-290-1001. Lone Star College-Tomball Community Library will feature many indoor events for all ages, providing everyone an opportunity to escape the Texas heat. Kids’ activities include Movie Days in June and Game Days in July every Thursday at 3 p.m. Special events will be held on Mondays at 3 p.m. and will include Puppet Pizzazz, Jungle Jim’s Bugs of the World, and a magic show. The library’s theme is “Dig Up a Good Book!” and will offer young people the opportunity to earn great prizes and certificates for reading this summer. Though school is out, teens are invited to beat summer boredom by attending fun Tuesday programs in June from 3 to 4:30 p.m. These will feature a Summer Reading Kick-off Party, Steampunk crafting, and Imaginative Images. Other events include a Mother-Daughter Book Club, Teen Movie Nights on Thursdays from 7-9 p.m., and a four-day Knit & Purl program from June 27-30 at 2 p.m. The library is not only a great place for young people, but is also offering many adult programs including book clubs and discussions, Sit and Stitch, and Arts and Crafts Saturday on June 11 from 11 a.m.to 1 p.m. Beginning June 15, movie mornings will be held every Wednesday at 10 a.m. featuring films based on books. Lone Star College-Tomball will be offering various Continuing Education classes. Three two-week cake decorating courses are scheduled for interested and aspiring bakers. “Cake Decorating I” will be on Monday and Wednesday evenings from June 20-29. “Cake Decorating II” will be held from July 26-August 4 on Tuesday and Thursday evenings. “Fondant and Gum Paste” is scheduled for July 25-August 3 on Monday and Wednesday evenings. Kleb Woods Nature Center and Preserve is offering “Wild Things at Kleb Woods” for nature enthusiasts of all ages. Activities include wildlife educational sessions and service projects. Bird walks take place on Wednesday mornings from 8:30-11 a.m. and the first Saturday of every month from 8-10 a.m. The annual Hummingbird Festival will be held on September 17. Trails are open daily from 7 a.m. until 7 p.m. For a glimpse into the past, tours of the farmhouse, Sunday house, barn, and horse drawn equipment are also available. Volunteers are always welcome to help maintain the preserve. All events and activities are free of charge and open to the public. For more information, call 281-357-5324. The Malcolm Purvis Library in Magnolia is also encouraging summer reading through the Texas Reading Club’s “Dig Up a Good Book!” The library is abuzz with activities and events for readers of all ages. Children ages 2-6 can enjoy Wednesday events such as Sing and Move, Birds of the Bayou City, Bugalicious Tales, and SandStorm Sand Art. Thursday activities for children ages 6-12 include a Dinosaur Extravaganza and Reading Magic. All of these events begin at 10 a.m. A specially designed “tween” program, for ages 9-12, features book club discussions, mad science, cupcake wars, and even a Wii tournament. These events are scheduled for Thursdays at 4 p.m. Teens are also invited to join the Summer Reading Club and participate in fascinating programs including various crafts and a magic workshop. All teen activities will begin at 2 p.m. on select Thursdays. Summer is the perfect time to relax, turn off the television, and get lost in a book. Adults are invited to participate in the Summer Reading Club, “Book Trek: Readers of the Lost Book,” from June 6-July 21 at the Malcolm Purvis Library. Both communities will host 4th of July celebrations with food and activities for the entire family. The City of Magnolia will also host a community parade. “This is going to be a free party for the community,” says Deborah Rose Miller, Economic Development Coordinator for the City of Magnolia. Firework displays will take place at dark to celebrate Independence Day in both Tomball and Magnolia. The Greater Tomball Area Chamber of Commerce will host its annual Tomball Night on August 5 to encourage business and community involvement. The event will feature a parade, fireworks show, and live entertainment. Many local businesses will also remain open after hours for evening shopping. In the past, Tomball Night has been a community sensation, and is expected to continue to successfully promote commerce and family fun toward the end of this summer.
