Local rising star showing off talents in Magnolia, Tomball

ashley austin At just 18 years old, Ashley Austin, a student at Lone Star College – Tomball (LSC-Tomball), is making her rounds in Tomball, Magnolia and surrounding areas playing solo, her originally written songs.

Her music carries elements of her personal style added to country and pop.

Immediately you can hear an influence of classic country. Austin has always had a love for country. Her most influential artist is Johnny Cash.

Austin has about 35 original songs which carry her personality along with them.

Her catchy, “The Work Song,” was written for a friend who wasn’t happy with their job. The lyrics make it difficult for anyone in the audience to keep their feet still and desire to skip work the next day.

Another appealing single, “Bring It On,” is written about when outsiders try to move in on other’s relationships.

Austin is known to sing other original songs such as “Big Time,” “Blink of an Eye,” “White Lies” and “My Romeo.”

In addition to her original songs, she covers songs by artists such as Loretta Lynn, Paramore and Taylor Swift.

She loves the stage and knows how to play the crowd.

“I love performing. It feels right on stage,” she said. “I remember thinking (at my first performance) that I am one in a million.”

Austin said she began singing at the age of three. She said her mom was surprised by her voice and noticed she had an ear for music because she could tell pitches and memorize words easily.

She said no one really pushed her to follow her current music path, but she continued to sing anyway.

“I was all natural,” Austin said.

She added that her mother knew a variety of music which inspired her to become a part of the musical world.

“I grew up around it and wanted to be a part of it,” she said.

At the age of 12, Austin went to her first concert and fell more in love with music.

“I wanted to perform,” she said.

After the concert, Austin picked up her first guitar, began playing and writing her own music and she doesn’t intend to stop there.

Austin has performed at Main Street Crossing, GenuWine Tasting Room, Texas Opry and many other gigs around Houston and Katy.

She is originally from Killeen and later moved to Cypress. She is studying music and music theory at LSC-Tomball.

After she completes her first year of college at LSC-Tomball, Austin plans to transfer to Belmont University in Nashville Tenn. to study music theory and music business. She said these degrees will help her be better prepared for what she really wants to do, which is sing and perform.

While she is in Nashville, she will continue to perform and she said she hopes she gets noticed.

Austin will be performing at the GenuWine Tasting Room on Nov. 10 and 26.
