Woodforest’s Monster Dash to scare up donations for Food Bank

woodforest monster dash There is still time for fun-loving ghosts and ghouls to register for the Woodforest Monster Dash, an obstacle race through the community set for Oct. 22 that promises a frightfully good time.

More than just a run, the event will require participants to tackle several obstacles to reach the finish line. Racers will have to brave a Monster Mud Bath, Tunnels of Terror, Horrifying Hay Hurdles, the Creepy Crawl, Boooot Camp and a few other tricky challenges along the route through Woodforest. Teams and costumes are encouraged. Adults, teens and little monsters as young as age seven may compete.

The public can pre-register for the Monster Dash by visiting www.woodforesttx.com. The cost is $25 for adults and $12 for young racers ages 7-12.

Check-in begins at 8 a.m. with the race starting at 10 a.m. Post-race activities begin at 11 a.m. and include a pumpkin patch, rock wall, arts and crafts, hairspray painting, face painting, games and more. Awards will be given for most creative costume, best individual costume and best team costume. Event-goers also can register for door prizes.

“We are very excited and already have people gearing up for the race and thinking of workout regimens in hopes of ‘scaring off’ the competition,” Woodforest’s director of marketing Kristi Steward said. “The race is going to be great fun and is helping a very worthy cause.”

Proceeds from the event benefit the Montgomery County Food Bank, which distributed 5.9 million pounds of food last year. The food bank fills approximately 30,000 requests for food per month, with 45 percent of the clientele living in The Woodlands/Spring/Magnolia region of the county. A $1 donation to the food bank funds 7 meals.

In addition to registration fees, racers are encouraged to donate canned goods. Non-race participants are asked to bring a $5 donation or 5 non-perishable food items to pick a pumpkin and join in on the post-race fun. Most-needed items include canned meats, peanut butter, jelly, canned fruit and canned vegetables. Woodforest Development and co-sponsor Keller Williams Realty-The Woodlands & Magnolia hope to collect 1,000 pounds of food and raise $5,000 for the food bank.

“There could not be a more important time to commit to doing everything we can to fight against hunger as so many of us are still struggling in this recovering economy,” Montgomery County Food Bank Executive Director Doris Golemon said. “One in 4 children in Texas does not know where his next meal may be coming from or when that meal will be. Each $1 donation we receive is equivalent to 7 meals, so $5,000 would be worth 35,000 meals and 1,000 pounds of food could possibly feed 400 people. The Woodforest Monster Dash will greatly impact the hungry in our county and we are very appreciative!”

“Keller Williams Realty has always been a company that gives back to the community and really makes community service a priority,” said Sharon Bourdon, team leader of the Magnolia office for Keller Williams-The Woodlands & Magnolia. “We partnered with Woodforest during last year’s pumpkin patch and it was such a great fit that we wanted to work with them again. We chose the Montgomery County Food Bank because they have a broad reach that will benefit many local organizations.”

A few sponsorships are still available for the Monster Dash, including R.I.P. (Really Important People), $100, and Sweet Treats, $50.
