While attending MHS and even after high school, Beckham says he joined several bands, all of which were a rock genre. Even during those days, Beckham said he has always enjoyed all types of music, including hip-hop. Beckham noticed how challenging it was to keep a band together. He said he had to depend on other band members and the band itself took a lot of dedication. In addition, Beckham said each song wasn’t always his own. Songs had to be reviewed and approved by other members, so that it would catch the style of all members of the band. After several attempts to keep a band together proved unsuccessful, Beckham decided to go solo. He explained, going solo was how dedicated he was to making music his career. “I’ve been rapping and into music since I was 15. I used to only play in bands, but I decided to flip the plate and rap and be my own band,” Beckham wrote on his Facebook page. That is when King Dirty Talk was created. “I am happier then I have ever been as an artist. It feels great,” he wrote. His songs have a unique style and beat. Beckham says since he is familiar with the rock genre there is a bit of rock influence and beat to his hip-hop music. “It’s an influenced blend of the two,” he said. “I wanted to bring something new to hip-hop and to Houston.” As a solo artist, Beckham is also able to tell his own story through his lyrics. “It’s like a diary,” he explained. “It’s my own story and my own perspective.” Beckham said while behind the microphone rapping, he is a story teller. “I am a music journalist,” he added. Since the creation of King Dirty Talk, he has released one album, Chronicles of Dreams. Beckham has also performed and recorded with other local artists such as Big Hush of College Station. “It brings different culture to each song,” he said. Although Beckham has not been signed with a label, he said he has had offers. He explained that he was waiting for the right label that would grasp his style. “(My goal is) to get noticed by a record company that believes in my story as much as I do and to pursue this for a living and to spread my story with the world,” he said. Beckham is also planning a west coast tour in the summer. All in all, Beckham says music is a form of art and he is dedicated to making a career out of it. Beckham will release his second album, 7 Years Bad Luck, Jan. 6 at the Jet Lounge in Houston. To purchase tickets, visit aftonshows.com/KDT.
