| Council hopes new audit committee to help with finances |
|
The Magnolia City Council has enacted an audit committee as a way to work on improving the city’s budget and spending.
Council members voted at a March 22 special meeting to create a group consisting of council members and residents to go over the city’s most recent audit and make adjustments accordingly. The decision to create the committee comes after recent audit, which reported the city’s deficit as having tripled since last July’s audit. “What the audit gave us was a great opportunity to start working on eliminating some of these problems so that our city will be on track,” Councilwoman Patsy Williams said during the meeting. “And the only way we can do this is stay right on top of it all the time.” Councilman John Bramlett agreed that the committee was a good idea, but urged council members to focus on the present. “The audit is the past, we need to look at the current budget if we want an audit committee,” he said. Council members discussed appointing committee members but decided to wait on naming members until a future meeting. In other city council news: A public hearing will be held regarding the impact fee stimulus plan the city created last month. By law, the city must hold a public hearing before the plan goes into effect. The council also voted to proclaim March as Fair Housing Month in Magnolia.
