THS grad to compete in Miss Texas pageant

miss texas A Tomball High School graduate will soon compete for the title of Miss Texas in the hopes of getting to the ultimate pageant stage – Miss America.

Megan Clark, a 2007 graduate of THS and a junior at Texas A&M University, is on her way to the Miss Texas pageant in June after recently being crowned Miss Great Plains.

Clark’s journey into the world of beauty pageants began as a pre-teen when Robyn, Clark’s mother, saw an ad in a newspaper about a local beauty pageant and thought it would be something her daughter would like.

“I thought it would be something she’d enjoy,” Clark said. “And she did.”

Robyn, who described her daughter when she was younger as a “girly-girl,” helped guide Megan through several “smaller” pageants at the age of 12 and at the advice of someone they met at a pageant, Clark also enrolled in modeling classes.

But it wasn’t until Clark began taking part in pageants again a year ago after taking a break during junior high and high school that she really began to flourish as a pageant talent.

After winning national honors in her division in the Universal Royalty system, she made the move to the Miss America system and right away began garnering awards.

“This year it kind of occurred to me, if not now, then when?” Clark said. “I decided to try Miss America. I’ve always been passionate about it, so it’s been exciting to go back.”

In just her first year in the system, Clark placed in the top five in six pageants she competed in and also won best in swimsuit several times.

At her 10th competition, she won, guaranteeing her a spot in the Miss Texas pageant.

“We were still kind of in shock that she made it into the Miss Texas pageant in her first year in the Miss America system,” Robyn said. “From what we heard that’s not very common.”

With the competition only a few months away, Clark is gearing up for the competition in June, in which she said she will spend a “grueling” week at the University of Texas at Arlington where she and other contestants will endure several preliminary competitions before the final night.

“You definitely work as much as you can on physical fitness,” she said of her preparation. “Beauty overall, upkeep, hair nails — you have to have as much community service hours as you can humanly possible fit in.”

She added that the most important part of preparation is practicing interviewing and answers.

Clark, a former THS Charm dance team member, will be performing a jazz dance routine as her talent in the competition.

She said her family has been her “backbone” in supporting her and friends have been “really encouraging” as well, but her “number one” is God.

After college, Clark hopes to study at a seminary in Florida and pursue a career in women’s ministries.

She will compete in the Miss Texas pageant June 28 through July 2. The winner of the pageant goes on to the Miss America pageant.
