Work continuing on Tomball Memorial High School

tmhs What was once a patch of woods, then a large barren field, is quickly materializing in the southern portion of Tomball into a recognizable high school campus.

At an April 13 meeting of the Tomball ISD Board of Trustees, Assistant Superintendent for Ancillary Services David Schuelke and Construction Project Manager Gary Hutton provided an update on the progress of construction at Tomball Memorial High School.

The district’s second high school is scheduled to open in August 2011 and is located off Northpointe Boulevard.

“There is a lot of work happening over there right now,” Hutton said.

In his update, Hutton said the roof on the new high school is nearing completion and masonry and duct work has begun on the facility. Windows will soon be installed on portions of the building, including the Fine Arts wing, where the air conditioning will be turned on in June, he added.

Tomball ISD has nearly completed the construction of the surrounding roads around the campus and will soon turn them over to Harris County, which will take over the maintenance and control of the roads.

The school’s athletic fields are beginning to take shape with sand bases going down on many of the fields, while light poles are going up. Tomball Memorial High School is being constructed by Gilbane Builders and was designed by PBK Architects.

With a $59.2 million price tag, the school will cover 360,000 square feet and have a capacity of 3,000.

Hutton also provided an update on the district’s new Ancillary Services building and transportation annex, set to be located on the former Beckendorf Intermediate site. The project is expected to cost $8.5 million and was scheduled to open in September of this year. However, Hutton said the facility will “probably not” be ready by then and that the project is about four to five months behind schedule.
