Waller County plans Memorial Day celebration

Waller County will host a Memorial Day Celebration May 31 beginning at 10 a.m. in downtown Hempstead.  The event is sponsored by the Veterans of Foreign Wars, American Legion and St. Bartholomew’s Episcopal Church in Hempstead.

The 11th Texas Cavalry will be on hand with Civil War booths, displays and muskets.  There will be a World War II-era jeep on display, a Boy Scout Flag Retirement Ceremony, light refreshments and an art contest open to all youth in Waller County. Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, ROTC and all military are encouraged to attend in uniform.

Event organizers are encouraging all Waller County, Royal ISD, Hempstead ISD and Waller ISD youth to participate in the art contest to support this event.  The cards made by those who participate will be sent as “Thank You’s” to service members serving overseas. Details about the art show can be found online at www.hempsteadchurch.com/memorial-day/art-contest/.

In addition, event planners are also looking to update their “Honor Roll” of those who have sacrificed their lives in support of the country’s freedom. Those who know of a service man or woman from Waller County who gave their life to our country, please contact Susan Laird (contact information below).  To see a current list of names, visit
