| Magnolia to take its time reviewing citations |
|
The Magnolia City Council has agreed to change the time period for mailing citations to drivers cited for running a red light at the city’s lone camera-monitored intersection.
An ordinance passed at a June 8 council meeting changes the warning period from 10 to 30 days, giving officials more time to review the incident more closely. Mayor Todd Kana said an “unexpected volume” of violations led to the decision. “We had 10 days to decide if it was a violation and then send it,” Kana said. “And we weren’t able to turn it around that quickly.” The ordinance amends a previous statute that established the red light camera system, but amends only one section by changing the time period in which a citation must be mailed to an alleged violator. The council voted to approve a contract with American Traffic Solutions (ATS) for a red camera light about a year ago. After the camera was installed, a one-month warning period went into effect April 2 and lasted until May 1. During this period, violators received warning citations but were not fined. Citations for running the light are $75 and a video of the incident is recorded and available to review for the person who received it.
