Magnolia gearing up for July 4th Celebration

Preparations are underway for Magnolia’s second annual July 4th celebration, which will also mark the grand opening of the city’s 30-acre Unity Park.

Plans for the event have been in the works for months, with a full day of activities and live music, including Magnolia’s own Charlie Lucas Band, scheduled to go on.

“I’m tickled to death,” said Magnolia 4A Economic Development Corporation (EDC) President Jonny Williams of the park’s unveiling to the public. “It’s been four years of working on this thing and it’s finally coming to fruition. I think it’s going to be a tremendous asset to the community.”

The day will kick off with a parade at 1 p.m., starting at Magnolia Junior High and ending at the pavilion in Unity Park.

Live music will start at 2 p.m., and a number of other activities will be available, including a splash pad for kids, demonstrations by professional skateboarders at the skate park and a hamburger grill-off.

Admission is free to the event and organizers strongly encourage attendees to park at Magnolia West High School and take the free shuttle service to the Park. Those who take the shuttle service will be given a ticket that will be put into a drawing to win one of several flat-screen televisions.

However, those riding the shuttles cannot bring any alcoholic beverages onto the buses, Williams said.

The shuttles will be handicap-accessible and the park will be providing cooling tents and misters.

There will be a variety of different food offered during the all-day event, including brisket and ice cream. Those interested in exploring the grounds can hike along the one and a half mile-long walking trails.

At 4 p.m., skydivers are scheduled to drop down near the pavilion, followed later by a dedication ceremony at 7:45 p.m. that will feature speakers including County Commissioner Craig Doyal, Frank Parker and Magnolia ISD Board President Cecil Bell, Jr.

The day of festivities will commence with a fireworks show at 9:15 p.m.

“It’s just going to be a full day,” said Williams. “Last year we had as good fireworks as there were anywhere around here. I had many, many people say it was just as good as Tomball and we will try to do even more in the grand finale than last year.”

The Magnolia Historical Society is responsible for putting on the event, but additional funding was also made possible through the 4A EDC and donations.

Proceeds from the event will go into a fund that will help pay for next year’s Fourth of July celebration.
