| Tomball ISD test scores continue to eclipse state |
|
Tomball ISD announced the preliminary results of the 2010 district TAKS scores at a July 12 meeting and the results show that Tomball students continue to perform, on average, better than their peers statewide. The analysis compared testing data “horizontally” – or by grade level throughout the past five years – and “globally” – with state results from the past two years. The data is presented by the percentage of students meeting TAKS standards. The comparisons to state performances were broken down into five subjects: reading, math, writing, social studies and science. For the second consecutive year, every tested grade level (3-11) in reading outperformed the state, at times seven and eight percent higher, such as in sixth (94 percent) and seventh grades (93) percent. Math scores saw large differentials in TISD scores versus state scores. For example, in ninth grade math, TISD students met standards at an 81 percent rate in 2010, compared to just 70 percent statewide. Similar disparities continued in 10th and 11th grade math. Writing, tested only in fourth and seventh grades, saw high scores at both the district and state level, with TISD fourth grade students (93 percent) and seventh graders (97 percent) both earning high marks. Social studies saw the highest scores, especially in 11th grade where 100 percent of district students, and 98 percent of state students, met standards. Social studies, tested in eighth, 10th and 11th grades, is continuously a strong subject area for district students, with each grade level scoring 96 or higher. Science scores, which have been comparatively lower both district and statewide, are seeing marked improvement. Throughout the past two years, the state and district have made percentage increases in grades 5, 8, 10 and 11. The final results of the 2010 TAKS scores will be formulated by the end of this month and presented to the Board of Trustees likely next month for approval.
