| NAM resale shop latest victim of copper thefts |
|
On the night of Aug. 10, an unknown number of suspects allegedly gutted three rooftop air conditioning units at the Northwest Assistance Ministries Resale Shop, located at 3645 FM 1960 and destroyed another unit. The units were removed of their copper wiring, leaving the resale store with only two functioning air conditioning units that are now struggling to cool the 27,000-square-foot store and warehouse. Currently, only half of the space is being cooled, NAM reports. “We must get these units replaced as soon as possible,” says NAM Director of Operations Randy Boyer. “Otherwise, we will lose sales and we will lose our volunteers.” The cost of replacing the units is estimated at $40,000. It is still unclear how much of this cost will be covered by insurance. Proceeds from NAM’s three resale shops bring in approximately 15 percent of the organization’s $8,700,000 annual budget. The stores have been struggling to meet sales goals due to the poor economy and increased competition in the resale market. “NAM cannot afford to lose any more sales,” Boyer said. Other retailers on FM 1960 were victimized, as well.
