Lauren Crites, Schultz Junior High Instructional Facilitator and Teacher, was named Region 4 Secondary Teacher of the Year Finalist. Since 1969, the Texas Teacher of the Year Program has recognized and celebrated excellence in the teaching profession in Texas.

Since 1988, this program has recognized two categories for Teacher of the Year: elementary and secondary. Crites was one of five nominees that were nominated by a panel of judges representing 20 regions in Texas as Region 4 Secondary Teacher of the Year Finalists. Before being nominated as top five finalists, Crites was selected among 97 teachers from 50 school districts to compete in the Region 4 Teacher of the Year Program.

Crites describes teaching as “more than a job; it’s a calling, a lifestyle, my love.”

In addition to teaching, Crites also is heavily involved in the community along with her students.

“A spirit of service involves looking past your own wants, needs, and desires, and seeking out ways to help those who have less than you or who are in need of your talent and resources. Instilling the spirit of service within an adolescent is priceless and powerful,” she said.

Crites attended Texas A&M University where she earned a bachelors degree in Interdisciplinary Students. She also earned a Masters of Curriculum and Instruction with an emphasis in Media and Technology degree from Prairie View A&M University. Crites has taught language arts in grades fifth through seventh and fifth grade social studies during her teaching career at Waller ISD.
