Magnolia Rotary fundraiser among highlights of MHS vs. MWHS week

The Rotary Club of Magnolia will host its annual Spaghetti Dinner fundraising event Friday, Oct. 15 from 5 to 7 p.m. The dinner will be held at Magnolia West High School just before the Magnolia West vs. Magnolia football game.

This marks the fourth year that the Rotary Club has held its Spaghetti Dinner before the football game between the two Magnolia ISD varsity football teams.

“The fundraiser has improved a lot since we started having it prior to this game,” past president Judy Bode said.

In the weeks prior to the dinner, art students at both schools were asked to submit T-shirt designs to the club that incorporates both schools. The winner will be announced at the Spaghetti Dinner. In addition to the student earning money for their design, the art department of that high school also earns a prize.

The high schools’ Interact clubs will be selling the T-shirts.

“Last year, close to 50 students designed T-shirts. The student who won had both football teams listed on the back of the shirt,” said Bode.

The Rotary Club has made a new addition, a silent auction, to this year’s Spaghetti Dinner. The organization aims to include as much of the community as possible and has invited the elementary choir groups to perform.

“All proceeds go to a variety of different community causes,” Bode said.

The Rotary Club turns the money back to the local community for such things as the high school scholarship program, Society of Samaritans, YMCA, and the Magnolia Historical Society’s Christmas event. Last year, the event raised about $14,000.

Spaghetti plates will be $7 for adults and $5 for students.

“We help financially and from a service stand point, and what we earn means we have more to give back,” Bode said.

The Magnolia Rotary Club meets Tuesdays at noon at the Celeste Graves Education Support Center on Nichols Sawmill Road.
