'Hide, Lock, Take' campaign aimed at cutting down on auto thefts

The Harris County Sheriff’s Office (HCSO) Auto Theft Unit has launched the “Hide, Lock, Take” campaign in an effort to reduce car burglaries year-round and increase awareness during the upcoming holiday season.

The “Hide, Lock, Take” campaign is designed to reduce car break-ins by encouraging citizens to “Hide” their valuables, “Lock” their vehicles, and “Take” their keys. Local businesses have joined the initiative by placing static cling signs in windows to remind customers to secure their vehicles.

The Auto Theft Unit reports that auto thefts are down 12.3 percent from last year. The rates of burglary of motor vehicle offenses have decreased 5.5 percent in the past year. As auto theft rates decrease, thieves are looking for easy targets. By beginning the “Hide, Lock, Take” campaign now, the HCSO Auto Theft Unit aims to raise awareness to prevent Harris county residents from becoming the next easy target.

“We want to involve as many local businesses as possible, but we will be focusing on areas with large numbers of car burglaries,” said Special Investigations Dep. Sandy Johnson. “By making business owners and employees more aware of auto theft problems in their area, they can remind their customers to keep their vehicle and belongings safe.”

The Auto Theft Unit encourages residents to use common sense by utilizing the “Hide, Lock, Take” principles to reduce their chances of being victimized. Businesses and civic groups interested in obtaining a static cling sign or scheduling an auto theft prevention presentation can contact Johnson at 281-446-4399.
