| Magnolia city, school events highlight Veterans Day celebrations |
|
Magnolia ISD and the Magnolia Historical Society are showing their support for veterans by hosting events to offer their thanks. The Historical Society is holding a celebration on Nov. 11 at 2 p.m. at the Magnolia Depot. All local veterans are invited to attend and be honored. In addition, residents of the community are invited to take part in the celebration. “Anyone can come and certainly honor the veterans,” Historical Society member Stefani Mitchell said. “We encourage people to come support and give thanks.” Society member Katrina Welch said this year the event will feature five guest speakers. “This year it’s focused on recent wars,” Welch said. This is the third year for the Historical Society to celebrate Veterans Day at the Depot. Reservations are not required and veterans will be able to enjoy a steak and potato lunch with homemade apple pie. “It doesn’t matter what war era,” Welch said. “This is a non-profit event; we just want to give back.” Bear Branch Junior High (BBJH) will also host a program on Nov. 11 for seventh and eight grade students. “This is the school's way of thanking service men and women for their commitment and courage they put forth to keep the United States free,” Communications Specialist for MISD Charlie Brown said. Two programs will be held in the school’s cafeteria. The seventh grade program will begin promptly at 1:30 p.m., and the eighth grade program will start at 2:05 p.m. Each program will last about 30 minutes. BBJH Principal Gerald Evans said local veterans wishing to attend the program can call the school in advance. “We would love to have any veterans in the area attend our program,” Evans said. Parents are also encouraged to attend the programs. For more information about the Historical Society, visit www.depotday.org.
