Elderly Magnolia woman killed in head-on collision

Dorothy Hayes Gandy, 79, of Magnolia, died Nov. 13 in a two-car accident on Nichols Sawmill Road.

According to Department of Public Safety reports, Gandy was travelling northeast on Nichols Sawmill Road at 6:30 p.m. when her Oldsmobile Sedan swerved across the middle line into the opposite lane and hit a Ford Excursion nearly head on.

Wanda Pearson, Administrative Assistant for Hempstead Highway Patrol, said it was unknown what caused Gandy to drive on the wrong side of the road.

The driver of the Ford, Stormy Lee Fisch, was not injured in the accident. No other vehicles or people were involved in the accident.

State Trooper James Gonzales was on the scene of the accident and suggested an autopsy be preformed in order to help determine the cause of the accident.

Pct. 5 Justice of the Peace Matt Masden ordered an autopsy for Gandy.

“The autopsy was ordered to help determine the cause of the accident; it was possible the driver had a heart condition in the past,” Masden said.

The autopsy has been completed, but the report was still pending at press time last week.
