Magnolia 4B hires help for Farmer’s Market

The Magnolia 4B Community Development Corporation hired Brenda Henderson at its regular meeting Nov. 23 to help with events for the city’s Farmer’s Market.

Prior to 4B’s consideration of her hiring, Henderson told board members that the Farmer’s Market should get additional vendors and be held two weekends of each month, rather than the current once per month.

City Manager Paul Mendes asked the board how the hiring would benefit Magnolia.

Henderson, a local vendor who sells her products at the Famer’s Market, said that the Market is some residents’ only means of income.

“This is our only living,” she said. “It (the Farmer’s Market) really brings people into the city.”

President of 4B Frank Parker said Henderson’s duties would include managing the Farmer’s Market, recruiting new vendors, public relations and advertising.

Board members suggested setting aside $12,000 from the Farmer’s Market fund to pay Henderson’s salary and advertising costs for a period of one year.

Other jobs would include making sure vendors have licensed kitchens and are legitimate farmers.

“We’re not getting into state inspection, but if they say they grow it, we want to make sure they grow it,” Parker explained.

According to Parker, the need for this position came about when previous city officials were no longer part of the board.

“We have been looking for someone for a couple of months and basically selected her,” he said. “We needed someone to fill that hole.”

Magnolia 4B decided that the position would belong to Henderson for three months at which point the board would evaluate the progress of the Farmer’s Market and make adjustments as needed.

The Farmer’s Market will be open Dec. 12 from 1 to 4 p.m. and is located at the intersection of FM 1488 and FM 1774.
