| Magnolia ISD earns ‘Recognized’ rating in 2010 |

The Magnolia Independent School District announced the results of the 2010 Academic Excellence Indicator System (AEIS) Report, which states that the district has earned a Recognized rating by the Texas Education Agency (TEA).
According to the report, MISD scored at or above the state and region on the majority of TAKS tests taken in the district last year. Overall, MISD had 80 percent of scores meet standards, which were 1 percent higher than the region and 3 percent higher than the state.
In addition, MISD had commended performances in all subjects except math. A Gold Performance was earned in Social Studies with MISD having 51 percent of students achieve high performance.
District ninth grade students had a 67 percent passing rate, which was 7 percent lower than the region and 4 percent lower than the state. That score also reflects a 1 percent drop from last year’s results, according to the report. Reading showed an improvement while math showed a drop contributing to the overall results.
The AEIS report shows that overall in the district 66 percent of students who failed reading in 2009 passed in 2010 and 43 percent of the students who failed math in 2009 passed in 2010.
MISD also earned Gold Performance for the number of students taking Advanced Placement (AP) classes and attempting to take the AP test. In 2009, 26.6 percent of students involved in AP classes took the test, which is 6.6 percent higher than the region, 4.4 percent higher than the state and 6.1 percent higher than 2008.
Students in the class of 2009 had an average SAT score of 1000, while the region was 1026 and the state was 985. The average ACT score was 20.8, with the region being 21.4 and the state being 20.5.
According to the report, 55 percent of the 2009 class was college-ready students. The report stated that MISD earned Gold Performance in college-ready graduates.
Additionally, the annual dropout rate in 2008 to 2009 for grades 9 through 12 decreased from 1.6 percent in the previous year to 1.2 percent. Seventh and eighth graders showed a 0 percent dropout rate for 2008 to 2009.
In 2009, 86.1 percent of the seniors graduated, while 6.3 percent continued high school, 6.6 percent dropped out and 1 percent received a GED.
According to enrollment records for 2010, across the district 72.8 percent of students were Caucasian, 22.9 percent of students were Hispanic, 2.9 percent of students were African American, 0.8 percent of students were Asian or Pacific Islander and 0.5 percent of students were Native American.
Of the total number of students in the district, 40 percent of students were considered economically disadvantaged. The state reflected 59 percent economically disadvantaged.
