Brenda Henderson, market manager for Magnolia Farmers Market, recently announced an expansion of the year-old market that features locally grown and produced fruits, vegetables, meats, cheeses and related products.

“This month we will be open two times a month instead of one, on second and fourth Sundays, and our hours are also expanded. We will be open from noon until 4 p.m. and hope people will come by after church,” Henderson said.

Not only is the Sweet Magnolia Pickins Farmers Market expanding it hours, but Henderson is seeking vendors to expand its quality offerings.

“We are looking for several items to add to the market,” she said. “But we are focused on keeping the items as homegrown as possible.”

The new market manager says there is room for about 20 more vendors at the market, located at the corner of FM 1488 and FM 1774. Quality requirements for the farmers market include state licensing, which means producers are licensed and all food offered at the market is prepared in a commercial kitchen that is licensed.

In addition to food safety, what sets Magnolia Farmers Market apart from others is its genuine proximity to the point of origin and its variety.

“We don’t allow resale, so all of our products are one step away from the ground or kitchen were they were created,” Henderson said. “And we protect our vendors by having an agreement that each vendor will have a featured item; so you won’t come and see a half-dozen booths with just eggs.”

The Magnolia Farmers Market is also growing its prepared foods and enjoys a cooperative relationship that yields more quality products for its patrons.

“Because only 20 percent of our vendors can offer prepared foods, we like to use market-member food products and only add items that will enhance the farmers market by extending the quality and variety of products,” Henderson said.
