Montgomery County set to open FM 2854 overpass

Montgomery County Pct. 2 Commissioner Craig Doyal will be on hand to cut the ribbon on the bridge as will other local officials and dignitaries, including representatives from local area Chambers of Commerce such as South Montgomery County, Greater Conroe/Lake Conroe, Magnolia Parkway, Magnolia and Tomball.

The overpass connects Fish Creek Thoroughfare to the existing McCaleb Road providing direct access to SH 105. It is approximately seven miles west of I-45 and six miles north of FM 1488. The bridge is the final piece of a regional mobility project that has had a large impact on accessibility, not only for Woodforest residents, but also for the entire southern Montgomery County corridor.

“This is the last link in a corridor parallel to I-45 that connects SH 105, FM 2854, FM 1488 and FM 2920 in Tomball,” Doyal said. “It allows for an alternate evacuation route in the chance of a hurricane, aids north/south mobility through the western part of Montgomery County and certainly enhances development of the west and southwest parts of the county.”

Construction on the overpass started in January 2010 and was contracted to be complete in May 2011. However, favorable weather and efficient work by the contractor allowed for an early opening, Doyal said.

“The overpass is particularly exciting for residents of Woodforest,” said Virgil Yoakum, general manager of Woodforest. “Now, Lake Conroe is less than 10 minutes away, plus residents have easy access to all of the new restaurants and retail along SH 105 near McCaleb Road. And home values are destined to increase with the greater mobility in the region.”

Doyal will ride his Harley-Davidson motorcycle across the bridge, leading a contingent of other motorcycle buffs and classic car enthusiasts, as well as those gathered for the event, to the Woodforest Welcome Lodge.

Ultimately, the north/south roadway will connect from SH 105 to the Grand Parkway once construction of that thoroughfare continues in the area.

The Woodforest Welcome Lodge is open daily at 101 Elk Trace Parkway. For more information, visit www.woodforestdev.com or call 936-447-2800.
